Any foreigner seeking a residence permit in Turkey must provide a valid reason for their presence. Having a real estate property, attending an educational institution, being dependents of a work permit holder, and conducting scientific research in Turkey are all valid reasons. There is also a type of residence permit card known as a ‘touristic residence permit.’ With this type of application, a foreigner and their family members can stay in Turkey for a year without having to provide any valid reason. However, as of January 2020, these permit cards cannot be extended, which means that foreign nationals must provide a valid reason to the Migration Administration within the last 60 days in order to stay in Turkey.
However, regardless of the type of residence permit card, permits are only valid for one year at the time of application. Later applications may request an extension of up to two years. And, according to general provisions, foreigners who have lived in Turkey for 5 years without interruption (not being out of the country for more than six months during that time) are eligible to apply for Turkish citizenship.
